Danish biotech startup secures $6.7 million investment to accelerate green agriculture solutions

Odense-based biotech startup Bioomix has announced a major milestone with a $6.7 million investment round led by West Hill Capital, alongside existing investors such as PreSeed Ventures, Planetary Impact Ventures, HBL Invest, and David Hollidge. The startup develops all-natural microbial products that can help farmers achieve a higher and better yield with fewer chemicals and emissions. This funding will propel Bioomix on its mission to revolutionize agriculture by harnessing the power of nature and naturally occurring microbes to create eco-friendly alternatives for farmers.

Bioomix, co-founded by Morten Østergaard Andersen and Julia Magdalena Østergaard Andersen, has developed groundbreaking technology called microbeTRAP. This innovative method employs 3D bioprinting to identify high-performing microbes from the environment, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative to synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Bioomix’s first product, SeedSpeed®, a biostimulant, was launched after just 17 months of operation.

Anders Kjær, PSV DeepTech Fund Director says, “In our upcoming DeepTech Fund we have made an unwavering commitment to only support technology and products that are right for the world and for the end customer. Bioomix is a driving force within this field as they work towards eliminating pesticides, antibiotics, and synthetic fertilizers from agriculture.”

Planetary Impact Ventures’s Managing Partner, Thomas Høgenhaven, comments, “There is an urgent need to foster living soils, reduce the need for fertilizer, adapt to changing climate, and decrease leaching of nitrogen to rivers. We need to foster new solutions that are respectful and humble to soil diversity. Solutions that can help more farmers transition to regenerative farming practices. We see Bioomix as a shining light finding and growing local microbes to help solving some of our times biggest problems.”

CEO and Co-founder of Bioomix, Morten Østergaard Andersen, expressed his excitement about the new investment, stating, “With this infusion of capital, we can accelerate the development and manufacturing of innovative microbial solutions for farmers, promoting sustainable, productive, and profitable food production. Our vision remains — to support farmers, make agriculture more sustainable, reduce its environmental impact, combat deforestation, and address the global food security challenges. This investment propels us closer to achieving that mission.”

Christian Brix Tillegreen, Director of Planetary Health at BII and anchor for Bioomix during its time in the Venture Lab program, added, “Bioomix is an outstanding example of how we can harness the power of nature and use naturally occurring microbes to solve some of the significant challenges related to agriculture and food production. Thus, this new investment round is an essential step in the company’s journey to reach its mission of providing sustainable and affordable alternatives to farmers to pave the way for a green transition in the agricultural sector,” he says and adds, “From BII’s perspective, it also means a lot as we would like to see even more ag-tech start-ups in our programs, and the story of Bioomix can serve as an inspiration for others as innovation in this field is highly needed.”
