OpenAI’s GPT Store is official, offers custom chatbots at $20/month

ChatGPT maker OpenAI finally announced on Wednesday its app store for the public to try the customized versions of its popular chatbot, ChatGPT, as the artificial intelligence company works to expand the reach of its flagship technology and turn it into a cash cow.

3 million custom ChatGPTs

The new store is dubbed the GPT Store, where customers who have subscribed to their ChatGPT Plus service for $20 per month can browse through custom chatbots that offer a range of services such as book recommendations, math tutorials, and scientific paper searches. According to a blog post by the company, the store aims to assist users in discovering popular and practical custom versions of ChatGPT. In an official tweet, the company says users can now choose over 3 million different types of GPTs as per their choice and needs.

This comes just after OpenAI and Microsoft were sued by The New York Times for allegedly infringing on copyright related to news content concerning AI systems.

OpenAI was initially established as a research company with initial investors from the likes of tech mogul Elon Musk himself. Still, it is now shifting its focus towards becoming a profitable enterprise that will compete with tech giants such as Google. The company has introduced a new store, hoping to transform its cutting-edge technology into an online platform that facilitates connections between businesses and customers.

OpenAI's way ahead

The ChatGPT maker has successfully raised capital from multiple investors and has been granted a whopping $13 billion by Microsoft in the past four years. The startup, headquartered in San Francisco, is in talks for a possible agreement or public floating that could assess its worth at over $80 billion.

However, the idea of a GPT store is not a novel one. Experienced software developers have utilized ChatGPT's foundational technology, GPT-4, to create various applications such as search engines and automated tutors. However, the app store allows a new audience, comprising individuals and small businesses with no prior software development experience, to distribute apps that operate on the same technology.

Recently, OpenAI has been making strides in improving and expanding its ChatGPT platform. One of the latest updates includes integrating the DALL-E image generator into ChatGPT. A new version of the chatbot has been introduced, which uses spoken words to communicate with people, similar to Apple's Siri digital assistant.

OpenAI has now made available a new version of the chatbot called ChatGPT Team for businesses and other groups. This service costs $25 to $30 per user per month and guarantees that any data shared through the ChatGPT Team will be kept private and not utilized to train its AI technologies.
