Sentian AI acquired by Weir to Advance Mining Efficiency and Sustainability

At the end of last month it was reported that global mining company Weir has acquired SentianAI, a Malmö-based AI solutions developer focused on optimizing performance in minerals processing.

Sentian AI has developed an AI product for the process industry, aiming to streamline large and costly processes by integrating technology onto customers’ control systems to enhance production efficiency and reduce energy consumption. In recent years, the company has focused on the mining industry, leading to its acquisition by Weir Group, a 150-year-old global mining equipment supplier headquartered in Glasgow, Scotland.

This strategic move will enable Weir to enhance its digital capabilities and offer improved productivity and sustainability solutions to its customers. SentianAI, established in 2016, boasts a team of skilled software developers and data scientists. Their software employs advanced AI algorithms that continually adapt to a mine’s dynamic processes, leading to ongoing improvement and optimization.

Jon Stanton, CEO of The Weir Group, emphasized the significance of digital technology in addressing challenges like declining ore grades, production efficiency, and CO2 emissions in the mining industry.

“SentianAI’s advanced software solutions complement and will bridge our Synertrex and Motion Metrics technologies well. Together, these will enable us to provide holistic performance monitoring and optimization for smart, efficient, and sustainable mining. We welcome SentianAI’s team of experts to Weir.”

he states.

The acquisition underscores Weir’s commitment to leveraging AI and digital technologies to drive innovation and efficiency in the mining sector, ultimately contributing to sustainability goals. Martin Rugfelt, co-founder of Sentian AI clarified that it’s operations in Malmö will continue and benefit from additional resources while being integrated into Weir’s product portfolio.

Martin Rugfelt has with this made his second exit. He has previously sold AI startup Expertmaker to eBay in 2016. Sentian AI was founded by Rugfelt and three former colleagues from Expertmaker shortly after the eBay sale.
